Who We Are

Military Divorce PC is a Virginia law firm dedicated to serving military service members and military spouses.

Whether you are a military servicemember concerned about maximizing your share of your military pension and positioning yourself and your career in the best light possible – or whether you are a military spouse who is concerned about spousal support, child support and how you are going to support yourself going forward, we can help.

Matt Hamel founded this firm after serving on active duty for six years as Navy JAG Attorney and he continues as a drilling Navy Reservist to this day. Matt served as a prosecutor, Staff Judge Advocate to two Commands and deployed to Iraq during the surge and served in Detainee Operations. Every member of our firm has received an LES Statement (Military Leave and Earning Statement) or is married to someone in the military, and all are well versed in the military-specific aspects of a Virginia divorce.

We have deployed and spent many months away from our families – and we understand first-hand the stressors that are placed on military families. We bring a military dedicated perspective and expertise to every divorce case. We also bring a compassion and understanding to what may have caused a breakdown in your marriage. The bottom line - whether you want to negotiate, advocate or fight and litigate – we can help.

If you don’t know what SBP, TSP, SGLI are – don’t worry, we can help. If you don’t know what a 20/20/20 spouse is and the many benefits that come along with that status – don’t worry, we can help.

If you’re worried about when and if your health insurance will expire, don’t worry, we can help you understand. If you’re worried about whether or not you or your children are eligible for the post-9/11 GI Bill education benefits, we can discuss this with you.

If you are worried that your spouse will contact your Command and adversely affect your military career, we can provide you with the tools to mitigate this damage. If you are the military spouse and your husband has essentially cut you off from any support, we provide you with a step-by-step strategy to forcefully alter these events.

We minimize your fear of the unknown by educating you on the divorce process and we specifically look out for the military specific benefits in your case. On top of all of that, you need to know that you are not the first person going through a military divorce in Virginia. Not even by a long shot. While this is likely one of the most traumatic times in your life, our firm and our website are here to educate first, and advocate, negotiate – and when necessary, litigate second. The Courts routinely handle support hearings, custody issues and property division.

We can help you from start to finish in your case. Our firm is centrally located between the Norfolk, Little Creek, Oceana and Dam Neck military installations and we are centrally located to the courthouses in Hampton Roads. Our office is in the BB&T office tower in Town Center, Virginia Beach. There is free parking in the parking garage across the street and we offer convenient consultation appointments before work, during your lunch break, as well as after work. Give us a call to schedule your confidential consultation.
