Karen M. Somers

Karen M. Somers is a licensed Virginia attorney and has been practicing law since 1991. She is a partner in Hamel Somers Law & Military Divorce P.C. and joined the firm in January 2014. Since that time, Karen has represented military and civilians, in custody, divorce and related matters in virtually every Hampton Roads courthouse with great success.

Before practicing in the civilian sector, Karen served as an Assistant Commonwealth Attorney for the City of Chesapeake where she prosecuted several hundred DUI and DUID cases as well as dozens of felony criminal cases involving theft, fraud, robbery and other non-violent crimes. She was the lead Commonwealth’s Attorney on sex offender registration cases and worked closely with Virginia State Police to protect the local community.

From October 1991 until she retired in July 2011, Karen served on active duty with the U.S. Navy as a Navy Judge Advocate (JAG) Attorney. While on active duty Karen served in a variety of billets, including Trial Counsel (Prosecution), Defense Counsel, Appellate Defense Counsel, shipboard Staff Judge Advocate, as well as on a number of Flag staffs. In addition, she served as an instructor at the Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island. Throughout her career, Karen served in numerous leadership billets, including acting Executive Officer of the Navy’s largest Defense Counsel Command worldwide. She also served as a Department Head in significant litigation roles across several Commands, including Senior Defense Counsel, Senior Trial Counsel, Legal Assistance Department Head and Claim Department Head. She was privileged and honored to mentor dozens of junior officers and enlisted personnel.

In 2009, Karen reported for her final active duty billet serving as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia in Norfolk, Virginia where she prosecuted crimes in Federal court. From 2009 to 2011, Karen was responsible for prosecuting all felonies in Federal Court investigated by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS), ICE and other federal law enforcement agencies. For her service to the U.S. Attorney’s Office as an active duty Navy JAG Attorney, Karen was the first recipient of the Elizabeth Fitzwater Public Service award for her efforts.

Karen is married to David W. Somers, III (CAPT USN RET). Their daughter Emma is a student at Johns Hopkins University.
